Harry E. Hull

Harry Hull served as Commissioner General of Immigration from May 12, 1925 to April 26, 1933. Born March 12, 1864 near Belvidere, New York, Hull was an Iowa businessman and local official elected as a Republican to the Sixty-Fourth Congress. He held his Congressional seat from 1915 to 1925.

After a failed re-election bid, President Calvin Coolidge appointed Hull as Commissioner-General of Immigration. Hull retired in 1933, and died in Washington, D.C., on January 16, 1938.

Fact: In 1927, under Hull’s tenure, President Coolidge appointed Anna C. M. Tillinghast as District Commissioner of Immigration for the Port of Boston, making her the first woman appointed to that position.
