Luz Escamilla, Utah State Senator
On Nov. 4, 2008, Senator Luz Escamilla, District 10, was elected to the Utah State Senate, becoming the first Latina elected in the Utah State Senate and the first immigrant elected in the Utah State Legislature. Now in her fourth term, Senator Escamilla holds the position of Minority Leader, driving impactful change in legislative initiatives.
For the past 15 years, Senator Escamilla's policy focus has been the well-being of Utah’s families, aiming to address the social determinants of health and uplift healthcare outcomes and quality of life. Her advocacy extends to the challenges faced by working families and the needs of children. Her comprehensive efforts encompass healthcare access and cost, food security, air quality, transportation access, high quality childcare, home visiting services, and more. As a passionate advocate for children's representation and access to essential resources, Senator Escamilla remains committed to ensuring their well-being and growth.
Senator Escamilla received a Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Utah. Her professional journey includes extensive experience as a business and political consultant, specializing in strategy and government relations for businesses and nonprofits. Notably, she was appointed by Governor Jon Huntsman in 2005 as the inaugural director of the State Office of Ethnic Affairs, overseeing Asian, Black, Hispanic/Latino, and Pacific Islander Affairs. Her 13-year tenure at Zion's Bank saw her in roles such as vice president of the Community Development Group, director for the Business Resource Center, and Market Manager for the Hispanic/Latino market. She also co-founded and currently manages ESCATEC Solutions, dedicated to enhancing technology support and customer experiences for diverse organizations and entities.
Senator Escamilla lives on the west side of Salt Lake City with her husband, Juan Carlos, and their children.
